Samkhyartha Samgraha Leicester - Further Study

Samkhyartha Samgraha - Grasping the Esssence of Samkhya

This course will present essential slokas from the Samkhya Karika and give a thorough overview of the text. We will explore samkhya from a traditional perspective and also see how it can apply more practically in the context of modern yoga practice.

Samkhya is the foundation of many philosophical systems and  disciplines in India including ayurveda, tantra and jyotis. Furthermore, it is often considered the sister philosophy to Yoga, so that a knowledge of samkhya might be considered essential to understanding the Yoga Sutra and other texts such as the Bhagavad Gita. In the West, samkhya is rarely studied by Yoga students, which is a shame since its concepts, definitions and formulations are like a master key for unlocking the theory and practice of yoga. The Samkhya Karika is often considered a rather dry text to study, but we will endeavour to make it light, accessible and even fun!

The course is aimed at teachers and serious students, but the most important quality is some enthusiasm to engage with the topic and practice. The weekends will include a good balance of theory and yoga practice, so will also provide some practical inspiration for your asana and pranayama practice. We will provide handouts of the text with space to make your own notes as we progress through the course.

Timings for the weekend are  9.30am - 5pm  Saturday, 9.30am - 4pm Sunday with some additional recommended (but not obligatory) home study and online content
