Sadhana Mala
Art Of Vedic Chanting - Module 1

Listen to Sheela

This is an exciting new venture for Sadhana Mala in association with Sheela Shankar of YogaNidhi, who is based is Chennai. Sheela was Desikachar's senior chanting teacher at the KYM for some years in the 1990s and was trained as a classical singer in both the Karnatic and Hindustani traditions. We are offering a full training in Vedic chanting over 3 modules (approx 2 years), with the possibility of a subsequent and  optional advanced module based in Chennai. The 3 modules will cover a wide range of material and qualify you to teach vedic chanting to a high level (although teaching not essential).

The full training (the 3 UK based modules) consists of a minimum of 260 contact hours. Each module will comprise 4 weekend (Sat/Sun) in Malvern and a 5 day residential week (Mon-Fri). Each weekend will be taught by Dave and/or Ranju, hopefully with supporting input from Chris Priest. Where feasible Sheela will also conduct some live group sessions over a video link from Chennai (yes- we have tried it - and it works pretty well once you have the right set-up!). The intensives will be conducted in person by Sheela.

Please note: this is a serious course and students will be required to put in extensive personal practice of approx 30min 4-5 times a week, to learn some of the chants by heart and to be prepared to chant solo. There is also a requirement to have some individual chanting sessions with one of the UK based teachers, which could be via skype or equivalent.

Each module will be run separately and you are only comitted to a module at a time, altough we would prefer students to progress through the 3 modules as their viability is contingent on student numbers. Students will only be allowed to progress from one module to the next if they are deemed to have made satisfactory progress, which is really a question of putting in the required practice. However if you do it, you will be in COMPLETELY different place by the end of the course. The syllabus will include over 50 full chanting passages to include, for example,  upanisads (narayana and taitirriya), suktams, santi mantra, rudram, visnu sahasranamam, yoga sutra, bhagavad gita, adityahrdayam etc!

The Malvern venue is 15 min from the M5 junctions 7 & 8, and close to Great Malvern station (short taxi ride). Great Malvern is directly accessible by rail from London Paddington and Birmingham. Accommodation is readily available close to the venue.
