A workshop aimed at all levels of keen yoga practitioners and teachers, either involved in, or interested in finding more about, the viniyoga of yoga and the teachings of the yoga sutra
The first four sutra (verses) of the Yoga Sutra hold a special place in that they contain the essence of the whole text. It is said that if they are understood completely, study of the remainder of the text is unnecessary. The second sutra, furthermore, is called the "laksana sutra" in that it expresses the essential characteristic(laksana) of Patanjali's yoga system. In this workshop we will explore these first four sutra, and several additional sutra, as a means to identify and understand the essential characteristics and elements of yoga and how these may be applied in practice. This workshop will be a mix of theory and practice , and handouts on the yoga sutra under discussion will be provided. The workshop will be accessible for those new to study of the Yoga Sutra and yet also contain some ideas from Vyasa's bhasya (commentary) that may be of interest to more advanced students. Practice will be kept simple to illustrate some basic principles of this approach to practice.
